Google is coming after you with the mobile penalty and it’s rolling out Now!
The 10th of January saw the roll out begin, which was confirmed on Twitter by Google’s Gary Illyes and John Mueller. They both stated it is indeed starting to roll out.
While this only has an impact on interstitials from clicks from the Google mobile search to your website, it isn’t currently impacting desktop searches or what you do on your own site.

How will this change affect your site?
- Popups that cover the main content which is immediately after the user navigates to a page from search results
- When the user is looking through the page.
- Interstitials that the user has to close before they access the main content.
- When a layout in the above-the-fold area of the page is similar to the standalone interstitial and the original content is inlined underneath the fold.
